What is the typical dogs' names in Japan?

Richard

An old valve set part deux
Is this the warp-drive?

Or is it the timer from a thermonuclear device?

It needs a 12AU7. But what will it do when it gets one? Will it be happy?

Perhaps on completion of the circuit with that 12AU7, the tuned coils will transmit through time and space and summon those who created us? Is inserting the missing tube the key to enabling the second coming?

Who knows? I actually just want to know what this is. The problem is that I have managed to get the amplifier going (on one channel), but I can't get any radio signals on either AM or FM. I thought it might be the pre-amp for a turntable, but there seem to be separate leads for the phono input, and this input goes to the selector knob.
Well that's all for now. I hope you are all as intrigued by this ancient set as I am (but I doubt it).

An old valve set
I'm just starting to try to fix this old Columbia vacuum tube stereo.

Isn't it lovely
.

The image above is the area next to the multiplex circuit board. I wonder if this is a serial number of a model type? I thought the chassis number ought to be punched in, but anyway, it might help to identify this stereo.

This pic shows the underside of the chassis. In front of the chassis is a pre-amp of some kind. I'm not yet sure if this is a pre-amp dedicated for the (now non-existent) turntable? Or whether it is the main pre-amp for all the inputs. This pre-amp is connected to the main chassis via a long wiring harness and plugs in the back. One of the tubes on the pre-amp is a 12AU7. My friend is going to see if he happens to have a 12AU7 in his 'box.' I hope he has.

The above pics are of the left and right sides of the facia panel. I hope this helps to identify it. If anyone knows where I can get the circuit diagram for this I will be very happy.

One last picture. Does anyone know the circuit diagram for this? On the facia panel it says "Columbia" "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY" "FM MULTIPLEX" There is no visible model number.

Easy to make bread
Generally I like cooking. I almost always eat what I cook, but as my cooking is usually some form of experimentation, the flavour is often not what other people usually expect. This habitual 'experimentation' with food preparation has had the effect of causing people around me to be somewhat wary when they try my cooking.
Anyway, I usually manage to create something that is edible. Here is such an occasion. It's bread.

Yeast is easy to find at the supermarket, so is baking powder. Of course flour is easily accessible as well. I used olive oil instead of butter. I cooked the bread in a big old toaster oven. I had to stand near it so I could manually adjust the temperature, and I stopped the top from getting toasted by covering the cooking dough with a sheet of aluminium foil. The foil was useful because I could watch the foil edge moving upwards to gauge how much the bread was rising.
Here's another pic.

The pic above also shows my kitchen table as it often gets, with various parts and bits of machines with tools mixed-in.
Anyone can make bread. It's probably more expensive to make it yourself, but I find the stuff I make myself is heavier than the bought stuff, and I can add any number of things to make the bread interesting (for me anyway).

My new patient
Here is another scooter I have just started to repair and return to useful service.

There are quite a few things which need doing. The frame is basically OK, but I'll clean the rust off it and prime it. Only a very small part needs a bit of welding.

The front forks need replacing. That's a bit expensive, but it is necessary. The throttle cable needs replacing, as does the rear brake cable. Doubtless I'll discover other parts which need replacing as well, but I've only just started.

Here is that Honda "naked."

Locks
Have you ever lost a key? Did you know that it isn't so difficult to open a lock without a key?

Some locks are very difficult to open, but most locks use a simple system of metal bars fitted into a cylinder.
The barrel of the lock (the part which turns), is prevented from turning when anything but the right key is used, because the key raises small metal bars (pins) to precise heights against a spring tension so that all the bars are exactly level with the diameter of the barrel.
The level where all the tabs allow the barrel to turn is called the "shear-line."

It isn't difficult to make a set of tools which can open a lock, and opening a lock can be an interesting and satisfying pastime. Some open locks as a hobby.
A lock-pick can be made from a hacksaw blade, or the stainless steel insert in windscreen wiper blades. Both of those two materials are strong enough to move the 'pins' inside the barrel of a lock, but a carefully cut hacksaw blade is preferable because it is harder and stronger.
Stainless steel inserts from wiper blades are easier to fashion into lock-opening tools, but they bend more. The hacksaw blades can make stronger lock-picking tools, but they might snap if you use too much force.

I enjoy being able to open locks, and I have even helped a few people open locks when they have lost their key. One of my neighbours was locked out of his house. I noticed him climbing up to the windows on the second floor trying to get in, and when I understood the problem, I went over and opened his door in a few seconds with a tool I made myself.
I first became interested in opening locks after I lost the key to my bike. I couldn't use the bike for a long time, and eventually I decided to learn how to open the lock. It took half an hour to open the lock the first time, but after practise I could open it in seconds. I could also open many different kinds of locks using the same or very similar tools.
The photos here are of a lock I decided to 'hack.' The lock was from a scooter my neighbour had lost the key to.
First I picked the lock so I could slide the barrel out, then I changed the order of the pins inside so I could use a different key. My neighbour was surprised I could do it.
Sometimes I need to change a part on a bike and I end up with a different lock. Its awkward to need two or three keys for one bike, so these days I open the locks and arrange the pins so that one key fits all of them.

Done the Dio.

This is a Honda Dio I've just finished fixing. It's been completely stripped-down and rebuilt.
Today I'm going to the Shiakusho to get a number-plate for it, then I'll ride it around for a few days to make sure everything is OK, and I'll repair and/or change parts if necessary.

The pictures were taken in the rain, which is a shame because if the pictures were taken on a sunny day, the colour would have looked much nicer.
If anyone likes it, then I'll sell it for 40,000 - or maybe I'll accept less in an offer. If you are interested then please contact me at maelstrom@po2,synapse.ne.jp (.)

The lawn tractor I fixed.
I just wanted to show you some pictures of an old machine I worked on.

I enjoy repairing things. I'll try to repair anything. When I see an old machine or device which is thrown away, I feel I would like to give it a new life. I really like old stuff that was made in Europe, the US, or Japan. I am not usually interested or happy to repair Chinese stuff.
It is extremely difficult to find any European things here in Amami which are old. There are a few European items for sale here, but if you look on the box you may find it was really made in China... Just the European brand name is European.
It makes me feel upset to work on Chinese-made things because a lot of the things are made under duress in 'political re-education' prisons. I understand things electric and electronic, and I can look at a circuit board and see that the Chinese things are made by people who have no pride in their work. I can easily imagine a team of undernourished political prisoners being forced to work in poor and unsafe conditions for no wages, with armed and sadistic guards watching over them. At least I feel the poor Chinese making the garbage electrical things are unlikely to be able to afford to buy them themselves, and the electrical things the Chinese buy are even worse than the crap they export to places like the US and Japan.
Old Japanese electrical things are usually beautifully made, and the circuit boards look like minature cities to me. Old Japanese electrical things used components with plenty of tolerance to spare, so they don't overheat or fail very often.
Old US-made stuff is perhaps even better. I have repaired some things made in the States which really surprised me because they were practically over-built, with things like tiny roller bearings on every moving part ... but I digress, and anyway, both US and Japanese stuff is often made either in China or with Chinese parts nowadays. This is why things don't last long. Apart from generally careless work, the components used in modern electrical appliances are chosen because they are the cheapest possible to do the job. But these cheap components have no tolerance and tend to overheat or spontaneously fail. Garbage, it is!
But wait until the Chinese get too expensive for the greedy corporations, and their work is out-sourced to Africa. Can you imagine driving a Toyota made in Africa by Africans? Such a thought scares the willies out of me.
Anyway, back to the tractor. I was waffling on about how the old stuff is good as opposed to newer things, because this Yanmar YC750 is forty years old, and it is built to last! The owner didn't maintain this old machine for over a decade, and during that time it got pretty rusty, and some parts were damaged by corrosion.

I was perplexed when I first got the machine because it looked impossible to fix. The tyres were cut, and flat, the wheel rims were badly rusted-away, the diesel injector pump was seized, a belt had broken, the front-end had been crashed, and the headlight was broken.
None of the controls moved because the cables were corroded. The rotating tiller on the back had a hole so the oil leaked out. The cover for the rototiller was completely rusted away. Generally, it was quite a mess (and I didn't take pics of it before I fixed it).

I welded the rims, and used pieces of steel I had lying about the place for filler. The holes were very big, and I even welded the edges. After it was welded, I sandpapered it, and then put a layer of epoxy over the whole inside area. I thought there might be too many sharp edges, so the epoxy was to make the inside smooth.
The injector pump was a big milestone to pass. I'd never worked on a diesel engine before, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to adjust the pump volume or timing correctly. I had studied a bit on the internet about setting the diesel pump, and what I read made me feel that diesels needed special equipment and trained personnel to set properly.

Unfortunately I erroneously took the injection pump off the engine before realizing I had no way of knowing where the adjustment was set. Anyway, I took the pump to pieces, cleaned all the pieces up, tested it a bit, then re-installed it in the engine. I guessed that the governer would be set so it would adjust the flow to zero-flow within a small movement of the governer cam - and I was lucky, because I guessed it perfectly.
The body of the tractor was very tatty. I spent a long time sandpapering, priming and painting the machine. The cables all had to be removed and repaired. A lot of the nuts and bolts didn't want to move due to being severely corroded, so I had to cut many off with a grinder. Also, several threads were snapped-off inside the frame, so I had to drill them out and re-tap the threads.

But it was the working portion of the machine that needed the most effort. I am not an experienced welder, so doing a big welding job is something that I would prefer to avoid unless I had all the right stuff. Well all I had was some metal scraps, and I had to find a way somehow to make a strong cover for it.

Anyway, I hope you like the pictures I took of it. I'm quite pleased with myself for managing to fix that tractor. It took around 50 or 60 hours to repair.

It runs well, and everything works.

Wanna buy it? I'll let it go for 100,000 yen - or maybe I'll take an offer?

Another thing I've just done is I've just today finished rebuilding another scooter. This time it's a Honda Dio. I'll do a piece on that scooter in a day or so. I want to sell it, so if you are interested then contact me. I'm asking 40,000 yen for it, but again, I might accept a near offer.

Fixing the car
We have a six year old Subaru Transporter. It's a box-type wagon, and it was chosen because it is cheap to run and can carry a lot of things. It's been very reliable, but recently it overheated and my wife stopped at the side of the road near Sadaikuma and phoned me. She wanted me to tow her back.
She said she stopped the car because the temperature gauge was in the red, and the inside-heating system wasn't working. It seemed a clear case of there being no water in the cooling system. The engine started OK, so the overheating hadn't damaged the engine. My wife was wise to stop the engine when she did, because the engine isn't in the best of shape after it ran too low on oil a while back and made something start to rattle inside.
So I positioned my K truck in front and tied a rope. I was a bit nervous with my wife driving in the back because she isn't used to it. I warned her the brakes would require more effort, and that there would be no power-steering to help her. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon, so there was a fair bit of traffic on the road, but not too much.
We started the trip to my Hatobama school slowly, and after Yagijima tunnel I was sufficiently confident about my wife's driving that our speed was about the same as other people normally drive - about 40km/hr.
When we turned off the main road as we approached the school, I saw the driver of a car facing me. She looked horrified, so I immediately looked back and saw Yukari about to hit a light pole, and the towing rope was stretched across the road, effectively blocking it. She hadn't managed to steer around the corner, and was heading diagnally towards the corner on the opposite side. I understood what had happened immediately and ran over to her car to switch on the ignition and defeat the steering lock which had engaged as the ignition switch was turned to the off position.
After that there were no additional surprises, and now it was time to see what was wrong with the car.
The radiator was empty - as expected. So I filled it up and let the air out of the relief valve in the back where the engine is located. It wasn't going well, and after a while it was obvious that the water I was putting in was coming back out again from somewhere - ie- a leak.
My neighbour was trying to help me, but his assistance was limited to holding the hose-pipe to fill the radiator. Once this was proved futile he left.
I could see the water was leaking from the front, near the radiator, but it was impossible to see exactly where without disassembling some plastic mouldings. So I let Yukari use my car and settled on the fact that I was going to be fixing the car all night.
I jacked the car up at the front and put wheel stands in place, then took the plastic mouldings off. Once off, I could see the radiator pipes, and after looking for a short while I found there was a section of steel pipe bolted to the body which was badly corroded.
NOTE: The battery in my camera ran out, and I didn't set the date, so the date is wrong.
(I'm useless with my camera).

I took this section off and cleaned it back to good metal and found three holes.

The rest of the pipe seemed OK, so the next day I took that 30cm length of twin-pipe to a local engineering workshop, where they brazed it for a very reasonable price. Great staff at that place - can't remember the name of it offhand, but it is only a couple of hundred metres from the school on the sea side of the main road.

I bolted it all back together, let the car down, and filled the radiator and finally started the engine.

When the engine started to reach operating temperature I let some of the air out of the relief valve, and soon the heat exchanger was working and we had warm air coming from the vents.
Mission accomplished!
Trouble was that I'd discovered the front drive-shaft boots on both sides at the front were torn, so that was another job I had to get done, and I decided I'd do it within a week because left as it was, the drive shafts could soon be seriously damaged, and I don't have the money to pay for new drive shafts. New rubber boots are a tenth of the cost of replacing the drive shafts.

I asked my neighbour to help me because he's got an impact air tool, and has a lot of experience doing boots. Unfortunately he wasn't so lucky with my car. He didn't have the 30mm socket to fit the Subaru's wheel nuts, so I went out and bought one, but his air driver couldn't shift it. The only way to do it now was to use those very expensive split boots that you glue together.
So I took back the normal boots I'd bought for the job and paid twice the cost for a pair of the split kind. My neighbour kindly did virtually all of the work changing the boots, and while he was doing it I tidied up his messy yard. Next time I'll do it myself.

A ghost story...
Tonight is Halloween. This year October the thirty-first is a rainy night for Amami. It's a pity it is raining because I'd like to have gone out on one of my bikes to O-hama. I just wanted to see the sea and maybe a few stars.
I like the nights in Amami. I feel comfortable in the darkness. I seem to sense where I am and the lack of light doesn't usually frighten or worry me. But had I gone to O-hama tonight it would have been very dark. The moon is still a crescent and it's impossible to see the stars for all the clouds and rain. Had I gone to Ohama I wouldn't even have seen much light from the sky reflecting off the sea and the sea would have appeared an even blacker expanse than the blackness all around.
So it is Halloween. Halloween means "trick-or-treat" for the majority of those aware of the significance of today. However I am not interested in the commercial manipulation of the date. Actually I do not follow or admire many things which have become established as American events, and am somewhat bemused to see the spectacle of Japanese being encouraged to try to mimic ideas which are entirely at odds with traditional Japanese culture.
There is however a deeper meaning to the thirty-first of October. Basically Oct 31st was once thought of as a time when the souls which hadn't found peace would be able to cross over to our Earthly plain and share our existences for just this night. (Or that's the gist of what I can remember about it from being told many, many years ago).
So the "trick-or-treating" can go and take a hike because I'm more interested in the esoterical and spiritual aspects that I associate with this night. Do you believe ghosts exist? I do. I've seen ghosts on many occasions. Not so much recently but I can sense them when I can't see them. I can summon them if I try, but summoning them has never worked out as a good idea in retrospect in my experience so I habitually avoid doing so.
I wanted to make this first entry to my new blog with a recollection of the first time I saw a ghost. So here it is:-
It is necessary to include many details which at first seem to have little or no significance to my seeing the ghost, so please bear with me.
I would have been around six years old. It was the middle of the night. The curtains were drawn, and it was very dark. Around the edges of the curtains I could see a faint light. The light was from the stars, and there was no moon in the sky.
There was no wind and it was absolutely silent. I didn't know why I had woken up. I must have been woken up by something because I was instantly wide awake. I opened my eyes and tried to see details of my bedroom but it was far too dark to do that. Then from the distance I could hear footsteps. I heard the sound of someone wearing shoes walking with a slow and steady gait. At first the sound of the footsteps was inaudible but at some point it crossed over the threshold until I could discern not only that there was someone walking, but also that the person was walking towards me. I began to feel afraid.
The house I grew up in in England was very old. It was nearly five hundred years old at the time I was a young boy there. The house had been in my family for generations. Actually half the village was at one time owned by my ancestors though successive generations had lost the wealth and most of the property and the big old house was just about all that remained in the family.
My bedroom was on the first floor. The first floor in England refers to what is known in US English as the second floor. My three brothers slept in the room above mine. My parents slept in the room next to my bedroom. Because our old house had been used for various purposes over the centuries, it had a curious system of staircases and rooms were accessed by passing through another room. From the living room below, by bedroom could be entered via a staircase. Then to reach my parent's room one needed to go across my bedroom. To get to my brothers on the second floor (US third floor) one walked across my bedroom and took a different staircase.
The house was made of oak beams and the walls were made with interwoven lathes of wood. the walls and the ceilings were covered with a plaster made with horse hair. The floors were made of oak, and my father had spent time exposing the oak beams in the walls and they were stained black.
That night it was so quiet. The curtains didn't move even the slightest bit. It was late October and it was very cold outside my bed. I hoped the footsteps would go away but they just kept coming nearer. They seemed to be coming from somewhere in front of my bed and to the right. Suddenly I lifted my head because the steps were so near I could hear the sound of the oak floorboards reflecting from around the room. Suddenly I saw a pair of shoes emerge from through the wall which was between my room and my parent's room. They were women's shoes. They must have been hard shoes because the sound of the footsteps was very sharp.
The room was almost completely black and I couldn't make out any details, but the shoes were a vivid pale yellow/green colour - they looked luminous like the figures on an old clock are luminous. The shoes never hesitated. They continued in a straight line and walked under my bed. Then the footsteps stopped and there was silence once more. I wanted to call my parents but I was too afraid to make any noise.
I lay in bed too frightened to move. I just lay there awake and all the time it was completely silent and cold. There were many trees in our huge garden and it was usually possible to hear the sound of the leaves moving, or sometimes a small animal or a bird would make a sound in the middle of the night, but this night there was only silence ... silence broken by the footsteps coming closer and then silence again. As morning approached, I could see a little. With the increasing light I felt less afraid. I looked under the bed after what had seemed an interminable length of time and I saw nothing.

As morning approached, I could see a little. With the increasing light I felt less afraid. I looked under the bed after what had seemed an interminable length of time and I saw nothing.
The story is not quite over. The next night I asked to sleep in my parents' bed. I told them about the ghostly shoes and whether or not they believed me I was allowed to sleep in their bed.
I slept on the side of the bed which was facing the wall where the shoes appeared from on the other side. My parents' bedroom had a window on a different wall, and there was an electric clock which was faintly illuminated, and as my eyes got used to the low light I could see the oak beams and the oak uprights in the wall. Curiously there was a small square-shaped box-section made of the same oak beams which formed the walls. It's difficult to explain, but only on one oak upright was there this strange boxed-in section which was made of the same wood. I was unafraid because I was next to my mother, but I saw a human finger and a human thumb inside this square of wood. I watched it for a long time and blinked and it didn't go away. The finger and the thumb were the same pale yellow/green colour as the shoes were that I saw the previous night. I became sleepy and when I looked again only the thumb remained. Then I must have slept for a while and when I looked again there was nothing.
My father rigged up a small light on the head of my bed soon after that, so if I was frightened I could pull the chain and the light would come on.
Well! That's it! I've seen other ghosts at various times, but that was the first time I recalled seeing them. I've seen a lot of things most people refuse to believe in. I've experienced strange happenings during my world travels, and I don't mind if I am not believed because I know what I have seen.
